During Men’s Health Week (June, 2018), we delivered an event with Lupton Fawcett Solicitors in York, with a focus on men’s mental health. We had some fantastic speakers who bravely shared their personal experiences of mental health struggles and what aided their recovery, particularly from an employee perspective.
Both Franky Woods (Agency 51) and Ed Simpson (former Police Officer) have experienced mental health difficulties and experienced the fear and shame of opening up when seeking support. Men’s mental health troubles often have different symptoms and may present with aggressive behaviours or angry feelings. Mental health issues for men might be particularly frightening as they are perceived to challenge the very notion of what it means to be a man.
Our exploration of stress and anger, following the unpicking of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts, addressed the warning signs and risk factors of men that might be mentally unwell.
The end of the day was complete with a relaxation Kung Fu style meditation using the body by Darren Good from GoodSense training and our interactive quiz, Kwizzbit, which helped to recap the key insights from the day.
